Companies that are offering one-off professional development programs may not be offering enough variety to truly help their employees grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>During our analysis to create our annual Lifestyle Benefits Benchmark Report, we dialed in on professional development to understand what&#8217;s truly working when it comes to how employees are using their professional development benefits.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To support this growing interest, we recently introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/learning-and-development-product\/\">Professional Development Pro\u2122<\/a> to streamline approvals and workflows, and improve overall utilization rates. With nearly one in five Compt customers (18%) offering professional development stipends, the need for a tailored solution to support diverse programs is growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We broke down claims from more than <strong>2,500 professional development vendors<\/strong> to understand more about the categories that employees prioritize, and the need for choice is apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we found? One-size-fits-all training doesn\u2019t work anymore. Employees expect learning tailored to their skills, career goals, and schedules. Flexibility helps learning fit into their busy lives without feeling forced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And L&amp;D specialists agree. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/blog\/2025-professional-development-essentials-for-hr-and-their-people\/\">recent podcast<\/a> with our team, L&amp;D Strategist Molly Dennen said, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Learning doesn&#8217;t happen in a vacuum&#8230; You don&#8217;t have one learning experience that lives in isolation from all of the others that came before or after it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re seeing more companies roll out micro-courses and training that employees can take on their own schedule, with topics ranging from career coaching to AI tools. And a quarter of reimbursements went to books, which included purchases on audio, hardcovers, summaries, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>With AI becoming more prevalent in the workplace, it\u2019s not surprising that productivity and tools came in third. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>We expect this number to grow with the popularity of AI-related tools to improve productivity and the ever-present mantra of \u2018do more, with less.\u2019 We saw this mirrored in our data of 2025 professional development trends, with AI being mentioned hundreds of times in claim details for tools like ChatGPT pro subscriptions, Claude, or books related to AI topics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-best-practices-from-compt-on-professional-development-funding-and-frequency\">Best practices from Compt on professional development funding and frequency<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When it comes to budget, employers are cautiously investing in professional development. Instead, the focus was on annual (60%), monthly (10%) and semi-annual or spot programs (30%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-3-tips-for-building-a-professional-development-account-that-employees-will-actually-use\">3 tips for building a <a href=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/guide\/what-is-a-professional-development-account\/\">professional development account<\/a> (that employees will <em>actually <\/em>use)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Make it annual<\/strong>. Offering an annual stipend for professional development means employees can access it when they need it most, perfect for an annual subscription or one-off professional development purchases. Through our analysis, we saw that annual also had the <em>highest <\/em>utilization rate at 41% versus monthly or semi-annual stipends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Start small versus nothing at all. <\/strong>If you can\u2019t support reimbursing tuition, ask yourself: could you offer a professional development stipend of $100 per employee? This could easily go toward books or productivity tools.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Offer choice.<\/strong> As you can see, choice matters! While they were all worth the investment, here are some of our favorite ones: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201c\u200b\u200bYear subscription to Code Academy to <strong>develop coding skills<\/strong> as they apply to data science.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A book, titled: <strong>\u201cWorldatWork Total Rewards Handbook\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A book, titled: \u201cWork Like a Boss: <strong>A Kick-in-the-Pants Guide<\/strong> to Finding (and Using) Your Power at Work [Kindle Edition]\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;<strong>Kindle Unlimited<\/strong> to access books about SQL\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c\u2018<strong>Thinking in Systems<\/strong>\u2019 book on management and organizational principles\/practices\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c<strong>2 online courses<\/strong> in UC Berekley Extension Program\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAI-powered <strong>writing assistant<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCareer <strong>coaching<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCFA <strong>Exam prep<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cSix Sigma <strong>Certification Program<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-focus-on-student-loan-repayment\">A focus on student loan repayment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Outside of professional certifications, books, and courses, we saw a growing number of <a href=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/blog\/student-loan-repayment-benefits\/\">student loan repayment<\/a> options. This contributed to the 76% YoY increase in spending share across Compt customers, representing 12% of<em> all <\/em>customer spend.
