I certainly didn\u2019t (how do you incorporate that into the dress-up box?). And at the beginning, Molly Dennen never did, either. But that\u2019s where she ended up \u2014 and from our recent conversation, it\u2019s clear she knows exactly what she\u2019s doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spoke with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mollydennen\/\">Molly Dennen, Fractional Learning and Development Strategist<\/a>, on our monthly podcast \u2018Getting Personal.\u2019 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennen let me in on her insights about how storytelling is key to positioning yourself as a strong candidate in today\u2019s job economy \u2014 and whether the \u2018ideal\u2019 L&amp;D program that can develop these kinds of candidates is a pipe dream. Take a look.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-managers-who-lead-well-nbsp\">Building managers who lead well&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennen took a long and winding road to get to where she is today. With a bachelor\u2019s degree in Spanish and political science plus a master\u2019s degree in international education, she spent a large chunk of her career working in higher education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for Dennen, a major realization happened when she realized that education had failed her \u2014 \u201cin so many ways that I didn\u2019t anticipate.\u201d When she discovered learning and development, which she describes as school in a professional setting, she was hooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Now, Dennen\u2019s goal is to partner with purpose-driven organizations who are truly invested in their people to help them understand how to deliver professional development essentials to their people. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And her personal learning journey has a direct influence on how she approaches L&amp;D and professional development work with her clients today.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennen was going to miss a week of school. All of her teachers were understanding \u2014 except this one. \u201cHe essentially berated me in front of my friends and peers and told me that I had my priorities completely misaligned. It was crazy. I was 17.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had a teacher [in high school] who was incredibly demanding and rigid. I was an athlete growing up and the week before senior year started, I tore my ACL, so I had to get knee surgery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of that experience, she\u2019s become a big believer that managers can make or break the experience for their people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI want organizations to do better. I want organizations to take learning seriously and take their people seriously and do the things they need to do to set people up for success. That\u2019s the ideal scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And when the ideal scenario isn\u2019t possible? People need to have the tools for themselves to navigate various workplace scenarios and <a href=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/blog\/professional-development-next-level\/\">future-proof their professional development<\/a>. Those tools are what Dennen aims to help provide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/getting-personal-subscribe.png\" alt=\"subscribe to getting personal newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-13482 lazyload\" style=\"width:722px;height:auto\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/getting-personal-subscribe.png\" alt=\"subscribe to getting personal newsletter\" class=\"wp-image-13482 lazyload\" style=\"width:722px;height:auto\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-thinking-beyond-the-resume-for-better-professional-development\">Thinking beyond the resume for better professional development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the workplace landscape has become more and more competitive, storytelling is one crucial tool that people need to cultivate. Simply having a resume is often no longer sufficient to get a promotion or a raise or a new job.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to tell a story right now. You have to have a resume, you have to have a LinkedIn presence, you have to have a personal brand,\u201d Dennen listed off. \u201cYou have to have this story that you know how to tell about yourself. You can\u2019t just hand your resume to someone and they\u2019re going to see it and be like, I get it. I see how you belong here. You have to be able to walk them through step by step how each of your experiences have scaffolded to make you the perfect person for this job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dennen talks a lot with her clients about cultivating a personal brand. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve leapfrogged from news to PR to brand and comms, and I know firsthand that personal branding is a job on top of a job \u2014 <strong>but one that\u2019s all too necessary<\/strong>. Sure, data points about what you\u2019ve accomplished are great. At the end of the day, however, people aren\u2019t going to see how those results fit into the larger picture unless you show them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the age of the death of the transferable skill,\u201d Dennen summarized, \u201cwhat\u2019s transferable is your ability to tell your story.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-building-your-professional-development-toolbox-nbsp\">Building your professional development toolbox&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I loved what Dennen said about telling your story and how it adds to the overall picture of professional development essentials. But not everyone is a natural storyteller. Is the \u2018perfect\u2019 professional development program a dream \u2014 or does Dennen have a secret formula she uses to teach people how to advocate for themselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her immediate response? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/molly-dennen-quote-systems-broken.png\" alt=\"Molly Dennen quote the people are not broken. The market is broken.\" class=\"wp-image-13468 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dennen, we\u2019re <strong>\u201chard skilling too close to the sun.\u201d<\/strong> Learning doesn\u2019t happen in a vacuum. Intersectionality applies not only to identity, but also to our lived experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking at my own experience, I have a criminal justice degree. I have a journalism background. At first glance, they might not make much sense together. But they add together to make up different facets of my skill set. And Dennen thinks we need to focus more on these broader soft skills that make us dynamic and interesting people as part of the new &#8216;toolbox&#8217; of professional development essentials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe problem is that we\u2019ve asked people to not be themselves. We\u2019ve asked them to be a very specific version with 15 years of experience using this one program, this one app, this one, whatever it may be. And so we\u2019ve asked them to ignore the other components that make them interesting people. The ideal is fixing that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Professional-Development-Essentials-example.png\" alt=\"professional development essentials example\" class=\"wp-image-13470 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Professional-Development-Essentials-example.png\" alt=\"professional development essentials example\" class=\"wp-image-13470 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bookmark-this-building-a-professional-development-toolbox\">[Bookmark This] Building a professional development toolbox<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no magical formula to reverse this trend. But there <em>is <\/em>a toolbox Dennen likes to help people build.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[The toolbox helps] them navigate all of these intricacies of storytelling, of being visible in front of leadership, of interviewing, of articulating value, all of these things that need to happen to get to where you want to go,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everybody\u2019s toolbox is going to look a little different. The goal is for yours to feel natural for you. Examples of Dennen\u2019s professional development toolbox makeup might include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Keeping a learning journal. <\/strong>Jot down reflections on what you\u2019re realizing about yourself, your story, and how you might fit into various workplace scenarios.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Getting coaching sessions. <\/strong>This could be an online course, a group session, or 1:1 coaching (with an L&amp;D coach like Molly, or with a coach who specializes in areas like personal branding or another skill you\u2019ve been wanting to learn).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning how to time block. <\/strong>Molly called this out as a valuable skill that can help you move forward in managing your personal productivity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, your personal toolbox is a set of tools that will get you from where you are to where you want to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" data-src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/molly-dennen-quote-skillsets.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13472 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/compt.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/molly-dennen-quote-skillsets.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13472 lazyload\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-develop-better-people-with-compt\">Develop better people with Compt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDisparate experiences or disjointed learnings or a random set of skills \u2014 that\u2019s what makes you unique,\u201d Dennen said as we closed out our conversation. \u201cYou are not a two-page bulleted resume.
